Science Fantasy Short Story {Reaper: Chapter One Part Two}

In the future, where man has traveled to the stars and beyond. There exists guilds with special abilities. Two such guilds are the guild of assassins and the guild of mages. Their laws prevent them from working together. Reaper is the story of two members of the guild, who ignored their laws and who fight for the greater good.
Genre: Science Fantasy Romance

“Techno-witch,” he said.
“Whatever, I need you, because Kiyah said that you were the best and I want to mount a rescue mission.”
“Rescuing what?”
“A person. A dualpath, being held by the Kainians.”
“Dualpath?” He placed his hand on the identity reader. The door slid open and Zion walked through. “Seems to me that someone with telepathy and telekinesis could save themselves...or at the very least not get caught.”
She followed him through, ran in front of him and stopped. “Would you please look at me when you talk to me?”
“Sure.” He sat down in a recliner.
She narrowed her eyes. “I would need to go past Kainian lines. And I—I have a bounty on my head. The Kainian wants my head and the Union of Planets does not care. I can’t even go anywhere near the neutral zone.”
“I have enemies too. Wouldn’t be smart to go traveling anywhere with someone as high profiled as you. Kiyah always said that it was better to fight in the shadows so you could live in the light.”
“I know. I was rash when I was younger. But the rumors are that you have gone there multiple times. Your fellow assassins—“
“I am not an assassin. I am a weapon specialist, and I haven’t gone recently. The vacation spots are terrible.”
“But you do go there. Look, I just need you to help me get in and help me get out. I will deal with our foes.”
“Right. So how strong of a Kainian have you fought? Some of them can move so fast that you won’t see them coming. How would you fight one that could move faster than you could say a spell? I imagine that is why you had old Kiyah sniping. To get them before they get to you.”
“I have fought a few of them. But none so powerful, I imagine if I had to, I would use a prepared spell. How would you fight one that could move faster than you could draw your weapon?” She raised an eyebrow.
“I would draw it faster.” He chuckled. “In most cases you avoid the more powerful ones in any way you can. Preparation? Well if you have seen some of the Kainians I have seen than you know there are some things that you cannot prepare for,” he said. “Remove your hood.”
“What?”
He said nothing.
She removed it, revealing a smooth head. “Better?”
“Are you human?”
“Yes. Are you?”
“You tell me. Since you and Kiyah obviously talked.”
“You still don’t trust me.”
“And I never will.”
She sighed. “You are mostly human. Your father was a pure human. And your mother was half-human, half-chloroman. He said that you hated your green hair, growing up so you use to shave it bald.”
Zion rubbed his chin. “Apparently he grew talkative in his old age.” He formed a finger pyramid in front of his chest. ”It is rare to see a human Tek Nok.” He leaned forward. “In fact, I am certain that they don’t let human females into the mage’s guild. So what was so special about you?”
She looked down and turned away. Facing the door, she folded her arms. I was one of a few survivors of Colony-81.”
“The colony that the media said provoked the Kainians? Nearly started a war?”
“Yes, but we were miners. We weren’t capable of provoking anyone. They killed my family and everyone on the rock. The Tek Nok found me, took me in and made me Tek Nok.”
“But the process of becoming Tek Nok, it could have killed you.”
“That was a risk, I was willing to take.”
Zion chuckled. “I will take you, but only for payment. I don’t do anything foolish unless there is something to gain.”
“I don’t have money. And contrary to popular belief, we don’t just conjure up credits with a wave of our hand.”
“Well,” he said. “Surely you have something to offer.”
Her eyes narrowed. “I am not that type of woman.”
“And I am not that type of man. I am referring to a spell or something. Something useful.”
“Oh.” She straightened. “Well of course. I knew that…uhm I have all types of spells. What would you like? I can help your crops grow.”
“I don’t need your help to do what the Universe will do for me.” He stood up and walked around. “There is one toy that a warrior at the guild had and no matter how hard I tried to figure out how to make one. I just couldn’t.” He circled around her. “I couldn’t figure out how he made it until I heard that a Techno-wizard blew him away and took it.”
“What was it?”
“A tesseract bag.”
“No way. I can’t give you anything like that; the council will have my head. That is exposing our secrets, a crime punishable by death.”
“We are walking into death’s garden and you are worried about being sentenced to death?” He stopped. “Where are we walking too?”
She turned around. “I see this will be time consuming.” She settled down on the floor, crossing her legs and planting her elbows on her knees. “He is located on the Pein penalty colony.”
“Pein? Maximum security. He will be guarded by high level Kainians. I will probably need the tesseract bag to complete the mission. Call your witch boss and tell him or her that if they want me to do this, I will need that bag. I help you with your little jail break. I get my bag. No harm. No foul.”
“This doesn’t have anything to do with the guild. This is a covert armada. We work under hidden layers and in the dark crevices of the universe, preparing for an inevitable war with the Kainians.”
“Really? I guess the old man was senile too.”
“What?”
“You guys are preparing for a war that may never happen. You don’t see that as a bit odd?”
“No. You haven’t witness what I witness.” She scoffed. “Are you going to help me or not?”
“I said I will help you. And I want that bag. This isn’t just about payment, I don’t go anywhere unprepared.”
“And I am telling you, sometimes you don’t have the tools you need, and all you can do is improvise. That is what Kiyah taught me.”
“He taught me that too. But I never listened.”
Bomba pinched her nose. “All right. I think I can get you a Tesseract bag. But I will have it sanctioned by the guild.”
“That could take forever.”
“I am in good standing with them, but I must warn you. If the guild approves it, they will probably booby trap it to prevent exposure of any of our secrets.”
“I expect no less.”

Their laws prevent them from working together. Reaper is the story of two members of the guild, who ignored their laws and who fight for the greater good.

Her presence filled the area. It was palpable. Dangerous yes, but no kill intent. A visitor but an ominous visitor. Would he let her get close? Of course not. He took a look at the stars through his sector’s dome. Peace seemed to elude him, no matter how hard he tried.

Did he really try?

He placed the last mustard seed in the ground, covered it with his left hand, grabbed the hand-held spade and threw it in the direction of the cloaked figure. It landed at the feet of the visitor.  “Don’t come any closer,” he said

She looked down at her feet, gazing at the tool as if to study it. She looked up exposing only part of her face. Olive skin highlighted by rose-colored lips, under the hood, one glowing red eye stared at him. “You fit the description.”

“What description is that?”

“A tall bronze man, with hair that defied gravity and an emerald necklace.  Young in body but eyes that are as old as death.”

“How poetic. But I assure you there are several tall, dark and handsome men on this space station.”

“I never said that you were handsome.”

“You would be the first. Look, lady I am busy attending my garden. Do us both a favor and leave.”

“My name is Bomba. Reaper, I need your help.”

He stood up and placed his hand on the butt of his plasma pistol. A warning. “Don’t say that name around here.”

“You would shoot a woman?”

“You are not a woman.” He pulled his pistol and shot, dead center. The image flickered and disappeared. A small sphere about the size of a coin dropped to ground. Zion walked over to it and kicked it.

“How did you know?” A voice said. Zion spun around to see another perfect image behind him. “My spell is undetectable,” Bomba said.

Zion sighed. He spun the pistol around his finger and holstered it. “You don’t think I haven’t met a techno-witch before?” He walked past the image and to the edge of his land, just under twenty-five yards. He looked up. “You can come down now.”

An image of Bomba appeared ten feet above him. She floated down on a blue energy disk. “How did you see through my illusions?”

“No footprints.”

“I could have floated.”

“Yeah. It was a risk that I was willing to take.” Zion stepped back. “I don’t have any real desire to kill you, but the fact that you found me and you know more about me, than I do about you is enough to place two in your heart or wherever the Wizard’s guild moved it to.”

“You are handsome, but I am beginning to wonder does that take away from your intelligence. I am Tek Nok. Information is our hobby.”

“Yes, but that type of information doesn’t come easy. Most of the people that want to find me want to kill me and will destroy this colony to do it. I grown a little fond of this rock, and I will do what I can to protect it. So tell me, how did you get so lucky?”

She smiled. “Kiah told me that you were a good man.”

“He would nev—“

“It was a confession made with his last breath.”

Zion felt something in his heart, something that he hadn’t felt in a long time. He turned away, still aware of her presence, still in tune with his sixth sense. She had no kill intent. He clinched his fists and turned around sharply. “How do you know him?”

“He was part of my squad. We needed someone from the warrior’s guild to help us. We got into a skirmish with Kainians of great power. We got away, but he was mortally wounded. He died in my ship and he sent me to you.”

“You lie. He was retired. Said that he wanted to settle down and live a good life.”

She showed her hands. “I do not. He did settle down. He married a Dipatronian who already had two little girls. He loved them more than he loved himself. That is why he joined my squad, because he knew that the Kainians would one day move into our quadrant of space and destroy us all.”

Zion shook his head. “The old fool. He was never good at close quartered combat. He should have took a hidden position and provided support.”

“He did. He had to give up his position to save us…. He had several things that he wanted me to memorize and share with people that were important to him. You are the last on my list.”

“First, what did he tell you about me?”

“That he was one of your instructors. That your father was a Weaponeer of the highest order an assassin specialist like he was, but he died when you were ten. He said that he took you in and completed your training and by the time you had turned twenty-three, you had mastered the weapons your father created and had begun creating more. Not because you wanted to use them, but because it was your art. He said that you are a great artist and like most artists you value life and really didn’t have a true heart for the art of murder.”

“And he told you all of this while he was dying?’

“No. He talked of you often, he saw you as a son, but he would always finish the sentence with, too bad he’s dead. It was at the moment of death that he said that you were alive, that you were a better warrior than he, and that with your help I could complete my mission.”

“What did he want you to tell me?”

Bomba stiffened as if gone into a trance. She looked around for a moment and then locked eyes with Zion. “Zion,” she said with a voice that bordered on baritone. “I know that honor dictates that I never reveal your location, but I must. A skill such as yours should never sit on the sideline while others suffer. I know this doesn’t sound like the man you knew, but age has a way of putting things in perspective. You have your father’s will and your mother’s creativity. Do not place either under a rock and hide it from the universe…. And also. And also, I want you to know that you were the most unusual student I ever had, the best warrior I had seen in four-hundred years and you were… important to me. I can see you cringing now, you always were—” Bomba’s body relaxed. A tear rolled down her left eye and gathered at the corner of her lips.

He stared at her for a moment. She was telling the truth. He looked away drew his gun and pointed it at her head. She didn’t flinch. “You are powerful or at least you think you are powerful enough to beat me.”

“I am.”

He placed his pistol in its holster, once again. “Then what do you need me for?” He turned around and stepped toward his home, watching her as he marched forward.

She wiped a tear from her eye. “There are some disadvantages to being Tek Nok.”

Hiatus

Short Story Saturday has been in hiatus for some time now. I have decided to go in a different direction and will serialize a novel, starting 9/19/2014. I doubt it will be easy, but if it was easy would it be worth doing?
Anyway, starting next week Serial Saturday will begin.

When you get a chance, check out may current novels below:
