Their laws prevent them from working together. Reaper is the story of two members of the guilds, who ignored their laws and who fight for the greater good.
Genre: Science Fantasy Romance

“This?” The warrior gestured. “Is only a minor convenience. Had he not blocked my shot earlier, I would have destroyed your holographic matrix.”

Bomba huffed.

“What is your name Bakashi warrior?”

“My code name is Foreman.”

“Your target is the witch?”

“Yes, why are you helping her.”

“As a favor to Kiyah, do you remember him?”

Foreman looked down and to the right. “The old master. Yes, retired with full honors. It is rumored that he joined the resistance.”

“Yes. He died for their cause.”

“Then I do not fault you for your actions, but I accepted the mission to kill the girl.”

“Yet you know that this version was a hologram…. You were going to send a feedback through the hologram and find her unconscious body later.”

“Yes.”

“Brilliant.”

“Who is your employer,” Bomba asked.

“He won’t tell you that,” Zion said. “But the fact that he is working with a Kainian who is obviously not a Bakashi, says volume. He is a soldier. A high-level one at that.” Zion turned to the Kainian. “What does the Kainian empire want with her?”

The Kainian scoffed. “She hasn’t told you? You, my dear assassin have no idea what you are getting into. They are waiting for you at the Pein.” He took his undamaged hand and placed it in his pocket. He pulled out a data drive. “Take it, everything is legitimate.”

Bomba picked up the data drive. Her holographic body stiffened and pulsated with energy. “The data has been transferred.”

“So did you guys blow up my farm?” Zion asked.

“Farm? What farm?” The Kainian asked.

“Never mind.” Zion jumped over the bar.

“Sir,” Foreman said. “Where is the legendary Thunder and Lightning?”

“You have a fan,” Bomba said.

“Not a fan,” Zion said. “We are all taught the importance of history. We do not live in the past, but we do honor the past. I remember you, Foreman.”

“You remember me?”

“You were among the first year students when Kiyah brought me to the academy. ”

“You were so advanced at age ten that they put you among the seniors at the academy. When they said that you were dead. I knew that it wasn’t true.”

“Yes. By the way, I am going to steal your ship.”

“Understood. But I must stop you.”

“You will try. Also, you are honor bound to tell the guild what happened here. Tell them that I have decided on a new occupation.” Zion walked toward the floating foreman. “I don’t kill for money anymore. My current job is to protect the girl. Outside of that, I will not interfere with their business.”

“Yes. I am ready.”

Zion stopped just in front of Foreman. “Drop the shield.”

“What?”

“We should fight on equal ground,” Zion said.

“It would only be equal if you had your twin guns.”

“Lightning and thunder are safely tucked away. A warrior has to fight with what he has.”

“Then I will only fight with my hands.”

“But he has four of them!” Bomba said.

“Please drop the shield.”

“Fine, suit yourself. Maybe this will lower the testosterone in here.” She waved her hand and Foreman came down with all four fists. Zion dodged. Foreman swung, his swing sending a fresh breeze over Zion.

“Reaper. Your marksman skills are legendary. But even with Bakashi training, you could never beat me in hand to hand combat. My people are legendary.”

“No doubt,” Zion said as he dodged another swing. “But The Lightning, started my mental training before I could walk. The Light—Dad, taught me that the most powerful weapon is the mind. I developed my sixth sense when I seven.” He jabbed Foreman in the shoulder with a knife hand.

Foreman grabbed his upper left arm. It lay limp at his side.  “What did you do?”

“Nothing that you can’t do with the right teacher and plenty of training,” Zion said. “But I will let you know a little secret.” Zion moved in quickly and jabbed Foreman with three more strikes. All four of his arms were now limp. “The sixth sense can be trained to sense weak point in virtually anything.” Zion slid forward, twisted and uppercut  Foreman in the jaw. The big man lay on the floor unconscious. “And you probably shouldn’t engage you opponent in conversation. He will probably try to throw you off your game.” Zion reached down into Forman’s utility belt and pulled out a ship’s key.

“Why do we need another ship?” Bomba asked.

“A guild ship is big enough to fit a small squad inside of it. I should be able to put your ship in the cargo bay. Since the ship belongs to them, they have no doubt travelled to Kainian space. We could use it for cover.”

“Oh, that’s a good idea.” She pointed to the Kainian. “But you probably shouldn’t have said all of that in front of him.”

The Kainian smiled. “Look, I have a family to go to. You don’t have to worry about me.”

“Do you trust him?” Zion asked.

“No.”

“Good. His body language says that he is lying,” Zion said. “We will have to come up with a new plan.”

“No,” Bomba said. “I like your plan. I have a spell for this. Just stay here and make sure these two don’t go anywhere. I have to switch to my normal body.”

“All right,” Zion said as Bomba’s clones faded out of existence leaving a small metal sphere behind. The metal sphere’s then dropped to the ground and turned to metal fillings.

“Techno-witch,” he said.
“Whatever, I need you, because Kiyah said that you were the best and I want to mount a rescue mission.”
“Rescuing what?”
“A person. A dualpath, being held by the Kainians.”
“Dualpath?” He placed his hand on the identity reader. The door slid open and Zion walked through. “Seems to me that someone with telepathy and telekinesis could save themselves...or at the very least not get caught.”
She followed him through, ran in front of him and stopped. “Would you please look at me when you talk to me?”
“Sure.” He sat down in a recliner.
She narrowed her eyes. “I would need to go past Kainian lines. And I—I have a bounty on my head. The Kainian wants my head and the Union of Planets does not care. I can’t even go anywhere near the neutral zone.”
“I have enemies too. Wouldn’t be smart to go traveling anywhere with someone as high profiled as you. Kiyah always said that it was better to fight in the shadows so you could live in the light.”
“I know. I was rash when I was younger. But the rumors are that you have gone there multiple times. Your fellow assassins—“
“I am not an assassin. I am a weapon specialist, and I haven’t gone recently. The vacation spots are terrible.”
“But you do go there. Look, I just need you to help me get in and help me get out. I will deal with our foes.”
“Right. So how strong of a Kainian have you fought? Some of them can move so fast that you won’t see them coming. How would you fight one that could move faster than you could say a spell? I imagine that is why you had old Kiyah sniping. To get them before they get to you.”
“I have fought a few of them. But none so powerful, I imagine if I had to, I would use a prepared spell. How would you fight one that could move faster than you could draw your weapon?” She raised an eyebrow.
“I would draw it faster.” He chuckled. “In most cases you avoid the more powerful ones in any way you can. Preparation? Well if you have seen some of the Kainians I have seen than you know there are some things that you cannot prepare for,” he said. “Remove your hood.”
“What?”
He said nothing.
She removed it, revealing a smooth head. “Better?”
“Are you human?”
“Yes. Are you?”
“You tell me. Since you and Kiyah obviously talked.”
“You still don’t trust me.”
“And I never will.”
She sighed. “You are mostly human. Your father was a pure human. And your mother was half-human, half-chloroman. He said that you hated your green hair, growing up so you use to shave it bald.”
Zion rubbed his chin. “Apparently he grew talkative in his old age.” He formed a finger pyramid in front of his chest. ”It is rare to see a human Tek Nok.” He leaned forward. “In fact, I am certain that they don’t let human females into the mage’s guild. So what was so special about you?”
She looked down and turned away. Facing the door, she folded her arms. I was one of a few survivors of Colony-81.”
“The colony that the media said provoked the Kainians? Nearly started a war?”
“Yes, but we were miners. We weren’t capable of provoking anyone. They killed my family and everyone on the rock. The Tek Nok found me, took me in and made me Tek Nok.”
“But the process of becoming Tek Nok, it could have killed you.”
“That was a risk, I was willing to take.”
Zion chuckled. “I will take you, but only for payment. I don’t do anything foolish unless there is something to gain.”
“I don’t have money. And contrary to popular belief, we don’t just conjure up credits with a wave of our hand.”
“Well,” he said. “Surely you have something to offer.”
Her eyes narrowed. “I am not that type of woman.”
“And I am not that type of man. I am referring to a spell or something. Something useful.”
“Oh.” She straightened. “Well of course. I knew that…uhm I have all types of spells. What would you like? I can help your crops grow.”
“I don’t need your help to do what the Universe will do for me.” He stood up and walked around. “There is one toy that a warrior at the guild had and no matter how hard I tried to figure out how to make one. I just couldn’t.” He circled around her. “I couldn’t figure out how he made it until I heard that a Techno-wizard blew him away and took it.”
“What was it?”
“A tesseract bag.”
“No way. I can’t give you anything like that; the council will have my head. That is exposing our secrets, a crime punishable by death.”
“We are walking into death’s garden and you are worried about being sentenced to death?” He stopped. “Where are we walking too?”
She turned around. “I see this will be time consuming.” She settled down on the floor, crossing her legs and planting her elbows on her knees. “He is located on the Pein penalty colony.”
“Pein? Maximum security. He will be guarded by high level Kainians. I will probably need the tesseract bag to complete the mission. Call your witch boss and tell him or her that if they want me to do this, I will need that bag. I help you with your little jail break. I get my bag. No harm. No foul.”
“This doesn’t have anything to do with the guild. This is a covert armada. We work under hidden layers and in the dark crevices of the universe, preparing for an inevitable war with the Kainians.”
“Really? I guess the old man was senile too.”
“What?”
“You guys are preparing for a war that may never happen. You don’t see that as a bit odd?”
“No. You haven’t witness what I witness.” She scoffed. “Are you going to help me or not?”
“I said I will help you. And I want that bag. This isn’t just about payment, I don’t go anywhere unprepared.”
“And I am telling you, sometimes you don’t have the tools you need, and all you can do is improvise. That is what Kiyah taught me.”
“He taught me that too. But I never listened.”
Bomba pinched her nose. “All right. I think I can get you a Tesseract bag. But I will have it sanctioned by the guild.”
“That could take forever.”
“I am in good standing with them, but I must warn you. If the guild approves it, they will probably booby trap it to prevent exposure of any of our secrets.”
“I expect no less.”

Short Story One Shot: Fearless

Team Savant is on hiatus for a few weeks. Here is an adventure of the Martian Detective Knight. To read the previous Team Savant story click Team Savant Short Story Egg-napped
It was a Harley Mach 5. The speeder’s chassis lay twisted and mangled in ways that seemed impossible. The Harley obviously rolled multiple times before stopping at the base of one of the red mountains.

Knight had seen this three times already. Teenagers bungee jumping from satellites or even swimming with tamed sharks. Sure, they were domesticated but some kids found that their instincts were still there…the hard way.

He swabbed some of the blood off the metal and placed the sample in the smart phone port. The victim…a Dr. Sheila Jones was a college professor at Pride. A picture came up. Young and beautiful. Her skin was fair—suggesting an absence of melanin manipulation. She would need a daily dosage of lotion to keep her risk of cancer low.

K1 scanned the machinery. “Sir, further examination shows that the victim’s blood has traces of the drugs shared by the other risk takers.” The metallic dog cocked his head sideways. “The vehicle is also registered in the name of the Pride University President.”

“Interesting.”

“How do you wish to proceed?”

“We should investigate.”

The two companions climbed into the hovering saucer. As soon as the saucer sealed, Knight breathed deeply. His teacher once told him that the hover cars produced an environment similar to the atmosphere of earth—before the nuclear event. Without a doubt, the air in the car was far superior to the air outside.

K1 directed the car over the sand dunes of the red planet, hung a left at the monolithic atmospheric station and drove straight to the University community. Pride University stood at the center of the settlement while the parking lot lay kilometers away near the residential area.

After registering with the settlement security, Knight and K1 strolled the two or three kilometers toward a system of metal hermetically sealed buildings decorated with fake plants and art work. At the sliding door entrance, the two stood still as a red light scanned them.

“Remove all weaponry and leave the K unit outside,” a soft voice said.

“I am a Ranger and he is my partner,” Knight said.

“This is a place of academia. No weapons are allowed in the buildings.”

Knight sighed, pulled out his peacemaker and gave the weapon to K1. The little canine swallowed it whole. “I will power down.” He lay down and placed his paws on his head.

“Goodnight old friend.” Knight pulled out his smart phone and pulled up the K unit app. He placed the phone into his pocket and waited for the door to open.

He stepped inside. A young secretary with an extreme low-cut blouse gestured toward the door. “The president will speak with you now.”

Knight noted that the receptionists’ skirt left little to the imagination. “What are you doing after work?”

“Sir, I am happily single.”

“How unfortunate.”

She smiled and continued her work.

He opened the door. The president leaned back. A middle-aged, tanned man of roughly seventy. His hair had the artificial appearance of jet-black dye. On his desk was the typical tools and toiletries found on the average desk, but one thing caught Knight’s eye—a small bottle of protective lotion.

The president’s smile revealed laugh lines. His dilated eyes shone brighter than his smile. “How may I help you Agent…”

“Knight is fine, Mr. President.” He sat down in the seat across from him.

“Call me Fence. I suppose you are here to report my missing speeder?”

“Yes, your speeder had a young woman, with drugs in her system splattered across it. A Dr. Jones, one of your employees.”

“Dr. Jones?” He frowned and shook his head. “Probably one of the new faculty. A shame. So she got high and stole my speedster?”

“Maybe. When did you last interact with her?”

“Interact? Not since the new faculty reception.” Fence ran his fingers through his curly hair. “Teachers teach and leaders lead, we hardly interact with one another.”

Knight nodded. “How did you know your speedster was stolen?”

“What?”

“It’s not like you can look out your window and see your speedster. You don’t have an alarm on it. So how did you know?”

Fence lifted his eyes up and to the left. “One of the maintenance workers told me—I forget who.”

Knight pulled at his glove and reached for the lotion bottle. He held it up. “You and I were born with genetically engineered melanin. Your cute secretary can probably tell me some things too. So, do you want to just… tell the truth?”

“I don’t know what you are talking about.”

Knight pulled out his phone and pressed the K-unit app. A holographic image of K1 appeared above the phone. He held up the bottle of lotion. “Scan.”

“Scanning…prescription belongs to Dr. Jones,” the holographic K-unit said.

“I want as many warrants as the Judge will allow,” Knight said. “And a drug kit too. Subject shows signs of influence.”

Fence’s hand shook. He placed both elbows on the table and then buried his face. He quickly lifted his head. “We were just doing some Fearless.”

“Fearless?”

“A drug that takes away all of your fears—I can get you some, if you want?”

“I overcome my fears—I don’t run from them. Now, what was your relationship with Jones?”

Fence held his breath. “We were lovers.”

“Why did she take your speeder?”

He studied his hands. “She became upset when she discovered my new secretary—I wasn’t going to cheat—just wanted some eye candy…she took my key and walked away. I called the police after I realized she wasn’t coming back.”

Knight noted his body language. “I believe you.” He stood up. “K1, secure the President.”

“What’s going to happen to me?”

Knight shrugged. “My boys in the drug department could really use someone with connections to the drug culture. Maybe they can work something out with you.” Knight grabbed the doorknob. “I am going to work something out with your secretary.”
