“Why can I see you?” Zorn asked.
“Because you are a powerful telepath,” Elmo said.
Nathaniel broke through the ghostly from of Elmo and
stood in front of him. “Who is Elmo?” he signed.
“He—“
“It would be better if you used your telepathy to let
him communicate with us and observe through your eyes.”
Zorn placed his hand on his temple. “Done.”
Nathaniel immediately jumped back into a defensive
stand. He signed frantically.
“I mean you no harm,” Elmo said. “My name is Elmo and
you will find that you can speak fluidly.”
Nathaniel eyes shifted from Zorn to Elmo. “What is
going on?”
“I am a reality hopper. Raiders attacked my shuttle
and the reality shuttle tore through this reality. I’ve essentially caused a
hernia in your reality and it must be fixed immediately, or—“
“The two realities will collapse?” Nathaniel asked.
“Eh no. Maybe. Typically the old one disappears,
creating a new one. Your friend can attest it is a painful loss for those
capable of remembering.”
“He believes that this reality is wrong,” Nathaniel
said, “but this is my reality.”
“No, it is not. This is the reality you are aware of.
Your mind is amazing but you are no telepath,” Elmo said.
Nathaniel shrugged. “It doesn’t matter. The risk of
both realities collapsing is too high.”
“Yes, but improbable.”
Nathaniel folded his arms. “Why should I trust your
judgment? You appear to be telling the truth, but you are the cause of this
problem.”
“Understood.”
The market place hushed and the people around them
bowed low. Even Nathaniel dropped to one knee. It took Zorn a moment to
discover the source of the reverence. Isis came through the main doors followed
by Angela and Jon. Isis surveyed the area, chin held high, dressed in regal
armor, which wore more like a bathing suit than a suit of armor. Angela and Jon
wore comfortable casual wear, and yet a blaster protruded from their hips.
Nathaniel broke their connection. “G—get d—down.”
Zorn stood motionless.
“Is this pervert the reason, why you are taking so
long Lord Nathaniel?”
Zorn frowned. “Pervert?”
“M—my ah—apologies m—my queen,” Nathaniel said. “I d—didn’t
realize th—the time.”
She grabbed him under his arm. “You do not bow to me.”
She lifted him to his feet. “After all, you are my future king.”
“O—old h—h—habit.”
She shook her head. “I suppose you will never change.”
She turned to Zorn. “Angela. This knight has forgotten how to bow.”
Angela swiftly moved to Zorn’s side. “Sorry.”
“What?” In the blink of an eye. Left became right. Up
became down, and Zorn was on his face, slowly registering the pain. “Owww… This
reality sucks.”
“I—Isis. H—he is my fr—friend.”
“Yes, and I have questioned that since day one of
meeting the two of you. What does he want this time and sweetheart, I love you,
but if this is a long story, please use your hands.”
Zorn turned sideways enough to view the end of Nate’s
explanation.
“If this is true. All I know will change. What if—we
are dead in this reality?”
“This reality may collapse if we do nothing,”
Nathaniel said after re-establishing his connection with Zorn. “But whether it
does or not, we have a duty to put things right.”
“How? How are you able to speak without—”
“According to our invisible friend. In Zorn’s reality,
I speak like this all the time. Isis, I cannot sit and do nothing.”
“I fear losing you.”
“You can’t,” he said. “I will always be by your side.
In this reality and the next one.”
Her knees nearly buckled. Embarrassed. She stood up
straight and turned her eyes elsewhere. “Well, at any rate, I order you to find
this problem and fix it, and before the reality changes you must come to my
side, if you are able…. So we may travel into this reality together.”
“My queen,” Angela said. “Should we aid Lord
Nathaniel?”
Isis turned to Nathaniel. “How may we help?”
“I don’t know right now. Telepathy is our most useful
tool,” Nathaniel said. “If I need your incredible strength or intellect I will
seek you.”
“As you wish.” Isis turned around and took three steps
toward the door. She stopped and looked back over her shoulder. “I will be
waiting for you.” As she left, more and more of the people stood to their feet.
Certain of his safety, Zorn finally stood. “Why does
she hate me?”
“You have no
memories of this reality?”
“No.”
“You peeked during a public bath?”
“Public bath?”
“Yes, Isis, Angela, Kagome, Marcella and Levision were
bathing in a public bath, and you had the bright idea to go spy on the girls.”
“No way.”
“We were ten, we didn’t know any better.”
“Ten? We have been friends since we were ten in this
reality?”
“Yes.”
“Wait—you were caught too.”
“Yes.”
“Why isn’t she mad at you?”
“They were mad at me, all but Isis. She said that we
were even since she had spied on me when I was eight.”
